Space Haven Crew Management Guide

Your crew is the beating heart of your spaceship. Without a well-managed, happy, and skilled crew, even the most perfectly designed ship is a cold, lifeless hunk of metal drifting through space. Space Haven simulates individual crew personalities, skills, relationships, and mental states.

Understanding the Skill System

Each crew member has "8" skills ranging from level "0" (untrained) to level "10" (master). Each level provides approximately "10%" improvement in task speed and quality.

In the early game with only "4-6" crew, everyone needs to be a generalist. By mid-game with "8-12" crew, you can afford specialists.

Crew Skills & Training Methods

SkillBest JobsTraining MethodPriority
IndustryAssembler operator, ore processor, hull repair, constructionAssign to assembler or processor for extended shiftsHigh — needed for all crafting and building
ScienceResearch lab, medical bay, navigator consoleAssign to research lab with active projectsHigh — gates all technology unlocks
MedicalMedical bay, treating wounded crew, surgeryTreat injuries in medical bay; each treatment gives XPMedium-High — critical after combat
CombatBoarding actions, ship defense, security patrolsParticipate in combat or use training dummyMedium — essential for combat but useless during peace
PilotingHelm console, navigation, docking maneuversPilot ship during sector jumpsLow-Medium — only one pilot needed per shift
ConstructionBuilding new rooms, installing devices, hull expansionAssign to construction projectsHigh — always have at least 2 builders
BotanyGrow beds, food production, algae farmsAssign to grow beds for continuous productionMedium — needed for food sustainability
MiningMining asteroids, resource extraction, salvageOperate mining console or boarding mining opsHigh — needed for early game resources

Schedule Optimization

The optimal setup for crew of "8+" is a staggered three-shift system: Alpha (08:00-16:00), Beta (16:00-00:00), Gamma (00:00-08:00). Each shift should have at least one crew with Industry skill for repairs and someone with Piloting on the bridge.

Morale System: Factors & Management

FactorEffectHow to ImproveDecay Rate
HungerCrew works "30%" slower when hungry, refuses work when starvingKeep food dispenser stocked with cooked mealsDaily — must eat 2 meals per day
Sleep DeprivationWork speed drops "50%" when tiredEnsure sufficient sleep time; provide comfortable bedsHourly during wake cycle
ComfortComfortable crew regenerate morale "25%" fasterAdd arcade machine, observation window, bookshelf, chess tableGradual — passive drain when comfort is low
Social InteractionIsolated crew develop depression and work "20%" slowerDesign common rooms where crew naturally gatherDaily — needs 2 hours of free time with others
InjuryInjured crew cannot work and drain medical suppliesAssign to medical bay immediatelyPersistent until treated
Workload StressOverworked crew develop burnout and may refuse dutiesSet shifts to "8-10" hours maximumGradual over consecutive long shifts
EnvironmentCold rooms reduce morale "10%"; hot rooms by "15%"Install thermal regulators; maintain "20-25 C"Hourly in unregulated rooms
Death of CrewmateMassive morale penalty for "3-5" daysHold memorial service; give extra free timeSlow — "3-5" days to recover

Handling Crew Conflicts

Assign conflicting crew to different shifts so they rarely interact. Give both separate recreational schedules. If the conflict is severe, reassign one to a different ship section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many crew members should I aim for?

Early game: "4-6". Mid game: "8-12". Late game: "15-20". Never recruit beyond your food and oxygen capacity — each new crew member consumes "2" food and "2" water per day.

Q: Can crew members die permanently?

Yes, crew death is permanent. They can die from suffocation, starvation, combat wounds, fire exposure, or decompression. There is no resurrection — protect your crew as your most valuable resource.

Q: What is the best starting crew composition?

At least "2" members with Industry "3+", "1" with Science "3+", "1" with Medical "2+", and "1" with Combat "2+". The Miner Faction gives strong Industry crew for beginners.
