Space Haven Ship Building Guide
Building your spaceship in Space Haven is not just about slapping hull blocks together. Every room placement, every corridor width, and every turret angle matters. A well-designed ship can repel pirate raids with minimal damage, keep crew morale high through efficient layouts, and produce resources at twice the speed of a poorly planned vessel.
Room Layout Principles
The single most important rule is adjacency efficiency. Group related rooms together: crew quarters adjacent to the mess hall, industrial areas adjacent to storage and the hangar. Every tile of unnecessary walking distance translates directly into lost productivity.
Compartmentalize with airlocks between major sections to create damage control zones that can save your entire crew if one section takes catastrophic damage during combat.
For main arteries use 2-block-wide corridors. For secondary passages, 1-block-wide is sufficient. The time saved by wider corridors compounds over hours of gameplay.
Room Types & Placement Guide
| Room | Required Size | Best Position | Adjacent To | Avoid Next To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oxygen Room | 4x4 minimum | Central, connected to major corridors | Power Room, Crew Quarters | Industrial, Storage |
| Power Room | 3x3 minimum | Adjacent to O2, center of ship | Oxygen Room, Shield Generator | Crew Quarters (noise) |
| Crew Quarters | 2x3 per bed | Inner hull, away from exterior walls | Mess Hall, Medical Bay | Industrial, Hangar |
| Medical Bay | 3x3 minimum | Near crew quarters and hangar | Crew Quarters, Hangar | Storage, Industrial |
| Mess Hall | 3x4 | Adjacent to crew quarters | Crew Quarters, Grow Beds | Industrial, Refinery |
| Industrial Area | 4x5 minimum | Outer hull with exterior access | Storage, Hangar | Crew Quarters, Medical Bay |
| Research Lab | 3x3 minimum | Quiet area away from high-traffic | Crew Quarters or Mess Hall | Industrial, Hangar |
| Storage Room | 3x3 per 4 containers | Adjacent to industrial and hangar | Industrial, Hangar | Crew Quarters |
| Shield Room | 3x3 | Center of ship for equal coverage | Power Room, Bridge | Exterior hull walls |
| Bridge | 3x3 minimum | Center-forward for navigation | Shield Room, Power Room | Storage, Hangar |
Hull Integrity & Structural Design
Not all hull blocks are equally important. Double-layer your combat-facing hull. Triple-layer critical rooms like the bridge, shield generator room, and oxygen generator room — losing your bridge means losing ship control.
Hull & Defense Components
| Component | HP | Power Draw | Build Cost | Best Placement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Hull Wall | 150 HP | 0 kW | 2 Infra Blocks | Outer perimeter, sealing rooms |
| Reinforced Hull | 300 HP | 0 kW | 4 Infra Blocks, 2 Tech Blocks | Combat-facing side, engine room |
| Armored Hull | 500 HP | 0 kW | 6 Infra Blocks, 4 Tech Blocks | Shield room, bridge, critical systems |
| Shield Generator Mk I | N/A (Shield: 800) | 200 kW | 12 Infra Blocks, 10 Tech Blocks | Center of ship for equal coverage |
| Shield Generator Mk II | N/A (Shield: 1500) | 350 kW | 20 Infra Blocks, 18 Tech Blocks | Center, paired with Mk I for overlapping |
| Laser Turret | 200 HP | 80 kW | 8 Infra Blocks, 6 Tech Blocks | Corners and flanks for 360-degree coverage |
| Cannon Turret | 250 HP | 50 kW | 10 Infra Blocks, 4 Tech Blocks | Front-facing for direct assault ships |
| Point Defense | 100 HP | 30 kW | 6 Infra Blocks, 8 Tech Blocks | Near engines and hangar to intercept missiles |
| Hangar Bay | 400 HP | 100 kW | 15 Infra Blocks, 12 Tech Blocks | Side or rear of ship |
Power Grid Optimization
Each power node has a maximum throughput of "400 kW" and can connect up to "4" devices. The shield generator alone draws "200-350 kW" — give it a dedicated power node. The hyperdrive draws "150 kW" — give it its own node as well.
Run two parallel power generators: a primary for critical systems and a secondary for non-critical systems. If your secondary runs out of fuel, your crew does not suffocate — only the luxuries shut down.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many power generators do I need for a mid-sized ship?
For a crew of "8-12" with a standard loadout, you need two power generators totaling at least "800 kW" output. Add a third when you upgrade to Mk II shields or add more than "10" turrets.
Q: Should I build turrets on all sides or focus on one?
Enemies approach from all directions, so you need "360-degree" coverage. Concentrate heaviest turrets on the front, with at least two turrets on each flank and one on the rear.
Q: What is the most efficient room shape for production?
Rectangular rooms with the entrance on the short side are most efficient. For assembler clusters, a "4x5" room with machines along three walls and the entrance on the fourth is optimal.
